Brown Owl/Totara Park, Upper Hutt | Easy |4.4 km
This walking and cycling route is easy and flat, combining the best of the Hutt River Trail with a lovely, scenic route along the Totara Park stop bank. You can start this loop at a number of locations, but if you have children, we recommend starting at Harcourt Park.
If you are in a car, park on Norbert Street near the Upper Hutt City Football Club rooms. Follow the river along Norbert Street, where you’ll pass the duck pond and playground at Te Haukaretu Park before turning to the right and following the Hutt River Trail alongside State Highway 2 down to the traffic lights at Totara Park intersection.
Cross the Totara Park Bridge and turn right into Awa Kairangi Park. Follow the path along the stop banks, taking in the views of the river and surrounding hills. When you reach the Norbert Street Bridge, cross back over to your car.
There are toilets in Harcourt Park, as well as at the UHCF Club rooms. There are also toilets at Te Haukaretu Park, and in Awa Kairangi Park near the Brightwater Crescent entrance. Food and drink can be purchased at the Brown Owl Shopping Centre or at Totara Park Shopping Centre on the corner of California Drive and Turon Crescent.
Buses regularly run past Harcourt Park along Akatarawa Road, and into Totara Park. It is also a very short distance to ride from Upper Hutt Train Station, to Totara Park Bridge.
