Kaitoke Waterworks Wander
Kaitoke Regional Park | Easy |4 km
Kaitoke Regional Park is only 45 minutes north of Wellington and 15 minutes north of Upper Hutt City Centre. The spectacular park covers 2860 hectares of native bush at the foothills of the Tararua Ranges.
The park is home to the Hutt River gorge and boasts a number of beautiful swimming pools. The park’s other claim to fame is that it featured in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, as the location of the mythical city of Rivendell.
While you’re not permitted to take bikes on the bush tracks, there are plenty of sealed roads in the park which make for good riding, particularly for little ones.
The park has toilets, camping facilities and a sheltered barbeque area which can be booked in advance.
The main entrance to Kaitoke Regional Park is 1km down Waterworks Road, 12km north of Upper Hutt on State Highway 2.
Park at the entrance car park, and ride up Kaitoke Waterworks road until you reach the turn off to the main car park at Pakuratahi Forks. You can ride on and check out the Weir Walk, or turn left and explore the beautiful Pakuratahi Forks area.
