Akatarawa Road – Upper Hutt to Waikanae
Upper Hutt-Waikanae | Advanced | 30km
This is a challenging ride through the beautiful Akatarawa Valley and Tararua Forest Park, beginning ten minutes north of Upper Hutt and finishing at Waikanae on the Kapiti Coast.
There are a number of ways you could ride this route depending on whether you want to use public transport to and from either end, or if you’d like to take a car. You may need to rope in a friend or family member to pick you up or drop you off, unless you’re game to cycle the full loop.
Start on Akatarawa Road about ten minutes north of Upper Hutt City – it will take you right through to Waikanae. You’ll climb over 350m during the first 20km until you reach the summit, and then it’s a steep descent down into Reikorangi, where you’ll turn left into Reikorangi Road and travel the last few kilometers into Waikanae.
Once you’re in Waikanae you could turn around and ride back again, arrange for someone to pick you up, take the train into Wellington, or if you’re really game, cycle approximately 60k from Waikanae back to Upper Hutt via State Highway 1 and Hayward’s Hill.
